Some hunting hints and tips for beginners

Geocaching is a sport that is played all over the world where individuals and organizations have hidden objects called caches (pronounced like cashing a check) which others will need to hunt for using a GPS unit. This does seem very easy but there are always difficulties getting to some of the areas depending on the terrain, and some caches have codes that you have to decrypt before you can find it.

When you start Geocaching you will need to know a few things and take some things into account. The first thing that you will need is a GPS unit and to learn how the game works. You will be able to find plenty of Geocaching enthusiasts who will give you advice and you can visit the Geocaching website to get details about each of the caches and their GPS waypoints.

The main rules of Geocaching are quite simple at the moment as this treasure hunting game is very new. You must take something from the cache, leave a trinket behind for the next hunter, and write in the logbook, so that the history of all the past hunters and their experience can be documented for all time. Sometimes a logbook will be the only thing you will find, but it can contain information about other caches, and tips for nearby attractions.

A tip for a beginner to Geocaching is to start with an easy hunt just to test it out. Choose a hunt that is on a 2 level or lower and the terrain should also be a 2. This will ensure that you get the best out of your first Geocaching experience without having too many hassles. Also be sure to take certain items with you when you do go on a hunt. Make sure that you are safe at all times, so tell someone where you are going, or even better take a friend with you and hunt together. Also take water and food because you never know how long you will be out for. If it is late in the afternoon then take a flashlight. Another important thing to take is a medical kit and toilet paper.

Use your initiative and think about what you might need depending on where you are going, like proper shoes, extra clothing, or your cell phone. Another tip for beginners is to take a pen and paper with you. You will not only need it to write in the logbook, but you might need to work out the decryption, so be prepared.
